Time for the horrible NCAA to impose the death penalty.

You know, it's one thing if there are classes that are known be easier or whatever that athletes might gravitate to (because they have to play and be coached), but outright unabashed fraud like this is ridiculous, and in an odd way it's predatory. It's also all the more outrageous because you know how competitive the scene is if you're there for academics. That that one professor was not evaluated for over 20 years is absurd. I won't even make a comment about that, but it smacks of the racket that academia can be.

Stories like this are why the NCAA should actually drop all of the academic requirements for athletes. If they just want to piss-dick around for 4 years and play football, let them. If they don't get their degree, that's on them. At the same time, drop the special treatment too.

It seems like a good idea, but it is irresponsible.  Students are accepted generally with the expectation that they will graduate.  I think that the better idea is to stop treating student-athletes like gods and role models, and to stop treating collegiate athletics like professional training grounds.

This is why we need to get rid of college sports... paying college athletes won't fix this mess.

But that sends the wrong message.  A component of the current liberal arts education model is wellness and athleticism.  Typically, a minimum of 3 credits (of 120) are required.  Also, college and university games are fun to watch, and promote fellowship and community among students.  A sports program can generate pride and and enthusiasm among students, and endowments from alumni.

I do agree that we should stop paying them.  Moreover, they must be students first, athletes second.  I also don't necessarily have a problem with the professional leagues recruiting straight out of high school.  In fact, if the public could accept that some of these pro-bound athletes weren't really cut out for cerebral labors and just allow the pro leagues to recruit them at the age of majority, then several of these problems would be solved because university athletics could go back to being what they were meant to be.

I'd never support ending collegiate athletics. Athletics are an integral part of a university, and some of them make mountains of money, which is why I would support stipends for athletes. This problem is all about culture. Athletes can take courses that aren't rocket science but aren't this complete fraud of a thing either, that's a given. This situation is the product of a heinous culture. You do the time and a minimal level of work, you get the grade. And a coach needs to stay on top of this and be supported by the admin - "Hey, get to class or you sit the first period, quarter, etc."

Then, why are you hosting a College Football Pick 'Em contest on the Off Topic board?  That seems to fly in the face of your post here.

The rest of the world disagrees with my opinions clearly... I can't help that.

This women, Debra whats her face supposedly chaffed under that racket herself in the 1970s and ironically ended up being facilitated in her plan to "help" people get around it by the very system itself (no peer evualations, Dept head in on it etc etc).

Question: How many left wing professors owe their positions to GOP voting boosters who demand victory from the football and basketball teams?

UNC students blame white supremacy and hetero-patriarchal capitalism.

agreed, I frankly don't care at all about this, they shouldn't have to do school or go to class *if* they don't want to. Voluntary
