The one who wasn't a White Supremacist.
I seriously don't know which one you are calling a white supremacist...
Truman.
Strom Thurmond ran against a white supremacist?
You're right - Truman was a civil rights FF. What is up with people's fascination with simplifying history? Truman was a racist son of a b*tch who "supported" civil rights to bolster minority support, and that does NOT make his actions any less noble.
I'd say its pretty damn impressive that the grandson of a Confederate sympathizers, regardless of his personal views (considering he was born in Missouri in 1884 I'm not sure how his views could have been anything else), would endorse desegregation of the armed forces and a civil rights plank even at the cost of losing the Southern states in an already close election. You might as well argue Lincoln only freed the slaves as a political move and originally supported black colonization.
He did! My point is there's no President with a flawless civil rights record, and it's annoying when people elevate some (Truman, JFK) while downgrading others (Eisenhower) who did pretty much the same thing and more just because of their partisan leanings.
