Like "political correctness", I am a big supporter of the term: it allows me to instantly classify anyone who complains about it non-ironically as an idiot.

Sometimes I think that Antonio Gramsci is more famous amongst right-wing conspiracy theorists than in any other group, including liberal-arts academics.

Of course, I did know this one woman in one of my classes who had an Antonio Gramsci coffee mug.

He's a surprisingly cool figure, as long as you take him with a massive grain of salt.

Is this the right place to complain about Theodor W. Adorno's truly ridiculous degree of elitism for somebody who was supposedly a Marxist, and the profoundly unfortunate views of women inherent in the Minima Moralia's analysis of relationships and marriage?

I was an English major!  And look where I am now.  Posting on Atlas.

Don't let your kids grow up to be English majors. Sad

I'm always down for complaining about his exaltation of dodecaphony as The One True Marxist Music, and the associated slander of golden great Igor Stravinsky.

I still don't get what could possibly be so great about Mahler if one presumes that folk and popular musical forms are all degenerate and false consciousness-inducing products of the 'culture industry'. Guess there's some things I'll just never understand.

Adorno's views on culture are, deep down, not really all that different than the silliness that is Ayn Rand trying to prove that Rachmaninoff was objectively the best composer.

I'm declaring as an English Education major, so I voted option 3.

Can't wait for Snowstalker to post in here.

Yes, I created this thread with the intention of provoking a serious discussion about the Frankfurt School.

Only if it's associated with a deep understanding of dialectical materialism.

to be fair, what we read of him was what he scribbled to himself in prison, perhaps to keep him sane for than any other purpose

Leszek Kołakowski made a similar point, saying in his review of Negative Dialectics that Adorno showed "massive contempt for the reader"

as for the term "cultural Marxism" itself, it's similar to "secular humanist" in that certain paranoid freaks turned a relatively obscure social movement/phenomenon into a catch-all epithet for anyone outside their own circle.
