Support socioeconomic Affirmative Action in preference to race based, but will support the latter when the former in not available, so: usually agree

The high amount of disagrees on this forum is not surprising, given its overwhelming young and white makeup.

Astute observation.  I was very opposed to affirmative action as a teenager, and perhaps into my early 20s.  Then I saw the world...

Yes well, I guess we have an aversion to practices that make life harder for us.

Anyway, strongly oppose (critical, racist, sexist, homophobic, disableist, xenophobic, bigoted, narrow-minded, fascist, reactionary, elitist etcetera etcetera)

Well, that is one way to look at it. The continuation of that thought though is while these sort of policies do make your life marginally harder, it is because you have it so much easier compared to the disadvantaged groups.

You're not a racist, you just prefer to treat certain races as inferior because of the color of their skin.

AA based on socioeconomic status?  Fine.  AA based on race is the very definition of racism.  What a condescending initiative.

Usually Agree / Not Critical

Equal opportunity does not exist here in any complete way and the electorate does not support the economic reforms it would take to begin dismantling old hierarchies of privilege and deprivation, so I am alright with some "reverse discrimination" designed get historically oppressed groups back to approximate parity with the majority. If nothing is done about gaps in income, education, and living conditions there will continue be demographic trends that give ammunition to centuries of supremacists to come who believe contemporary social ills are caused by genetic differences between social groups. It's an awkward issue.

Not when it is being used as an attempt to counteract decades of policy 110% based on race, specifically, making sure one race was always far, far, far underneath another in a socioeconomic sense.

Give people merit based on the challenges they have faced in their lives - some of which will be related to race, demography and discrimination.   But treat people as individuals, not as just another instance of some category.
