This may serve as discussion thread for the winter 14/15 Ski Alpin season, if such is needed.
1st Race Weekend - Sölden:The usual start of the winter season are the two races on the glacier in Sölden in Austria. Sölden is a small ski resort town not far from where I live (~40 mins), at the end of a valley near a big glacier area. Usually they struggle with having enough snow as their race is always in the end of October, but this year it has snowed just days prior, so everything is nice and white, also down in the valley.
The two Sölden races are both Giant Slaloms, the one for women on Saturday and the one for men on Sunday. Giant Slaloms are held in two runs, with the best thirty from the first run competing in the second run; starting with the one with the worst time of the thirty to the one with the best time in the first run.
The woman race was already held, it just finished ten minutes prior, with the following results:
1. Anna Fenninger (AT) 02:39.85
1. Mikaela Shiffrin (US) (tied)
3. Eva Maria Brem (AT) +00:27
4. Kathrin Zettel (AT) +00:29
5. Frederica Bringone (IT) +00:37
It should be clear after seeing these results that Austria is by far the best skiing nation
This race also marked the first time since six years that an Austrian woman won in Sölden
