georg ebner says that Alexander VdB would be the first one if elected in 2016.

I'm thinking about presidents more than prime ministers (of which there might have been some).

A sensation in the PRESIDENTial election of 2016 is possible (at least now): The first GREEN head of state worldwide!, as Gallup polls (for www.oe24.at) prof. VanDerBellen with 39, the likely FPÖ-candidate with 9 and two imaginable candidates - Leitl/ÖVP and Bures/SPÖ - with 29 and 20.

I'm almost completely certain there has neither been a Green HoS nor a HoG.
The Green candidate in Finland's last presidential election ended as runner up with 37% of the vote, but that's the closest anyone has come so far... well unless you count Prince Charles, he's technically been a heartbeat away from it for years, but it's not like Old Liz intend to die anytime soon.

Indulis Emsis of the Latvian greens was head of a caretaker government not too long ago. but they are more like the Nordic centre parties and 'til last week were applied with Ukip in the EP

Don't think so... even though Baden-Württemberg has a Green Party head of government and is at least larger than Austria population-wise. Tongue

I have always wondered about the Royal Families private political views. What proof is there that Charlie likes the Greens though?

The PM of Vanuatu, Moana Kalosil is a green HoG. He's a liberal Green that leads a rather large coalition.

I genuinely thought Silva would be the first, even if she wouldn't be elected under the Green banner.

Colombia also appeared to come close in 2010, but it may have been an illusion of colombia's terrible polls.

The current president of Latvia, Andris Bērziņš, is also a member of the Green Party.

That MEP wasn't a Green though. She was a member of the Latvian Farmers' Union, which has an electoral alliance with the Greens. Pretty sure an actual Latvian Green would sit with the Euro Greens, although, as you said, they are much more conservative.

Charles: Green
Elizabeth: SDP (pre-continuity)
Philip: Ukip
Harry: Sun reader who doesn't care who runs the country, as long as...

In more seriousness, Wales's public views in this regard include uncontroversial views on sustainability, conservationism, protection of rural England, and his banal dislike of modernist architecture. None of these would rule him out of, or into, any UK political party.

Given the Green Party of England and Wales is a republican party, I'd be surprised if Charles is a fan.

Václav Havel has been a supporter of the Czech Green Party since 2004, which is after he left office, but he supported the green politics movement in general since 1980s.

I guess that's the closest we've got.

there's a spitting image sketch from the 1987 election about how the royals would vote if they could. quote accurate except Liz is selling vopies of Socialist Worker outside a tube station because it "annoys Mrs Thatcher" (they didn't get on very well and she is reported to have said yhat the Queen is "the kind of person who might vote for the SDP)

I would post it but i'm currently 40,000feet above the north sea...:-)

An oligarch like Berzins in Latvia can - hopefully! - not be seen as a real GREEN, thus VanDerBellen were the first. More difficult: SalzburgCity, the home-town of me (and roughly also of our "Tender Branson") claims, that it had the first GREEN executive worldwide (1982). "Joschka" Fischer in Hessia was sworn in 1983, but does anyone know an earlier GREEN minister?

In the Netherlands, the Politieke Partij Radicalen (Political Party of Radicals) participated in the Den Uyl government (1973-1977). The PPR later merged into GroenLinks in 1989, and was during its existence a party with a 'green' agenda.

In the early 80s some of the more 'Fundi' greenies left the PPR to form De Groenen, but that party has never been successful (although it still exists).

That's the Thatcher remark that was at the back of my head

I think the sketch began with E II chanting "Meggie Out".

The PM of Vanuatu, Moana Kalosil is a green HoG. He's a liberal Green that leads a rather large coalition.

His coalition collapsed in May, so he got a little less than 14 Months in office. The Green Confederation is a legitimate Green party with deforestation as their main concern, so despite Vanuatu parties not being ideological it should count.

The royals can't vote (or at least, they're strongly advised not to) and are not supposed to espouse political views for fear of compromising their neutrality.

Boris Palmer was re-elected as mayor of Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg (population: 85,000) with 62% of the vote in the first round two weeks ago.
