Unfortunately I think that is correct, but he will probably come in 2nd place in a dozen or so.

Perhaps some really rural, but democratic county(ies). Possibilities: Ziebach, Corson, Buffalo, maybe Dewey.

Pressler used to represent the obsolete 1st CD, didn't he?
So I guess, if he should win any counties at all, they'd lie in South East Dakota, wouldn't they?

Mathematically speaking, is it possible for a candidate who comes in second in every county to win a statewide election with the other two candidates flipping between 1st and 3rd place?

I was a bit optimistic for Pressler.  He came in 2nd in Harding, Butte, Haakon, Jones (all won by Rounds) and Shannon (won by Weiland).

In the counties colored in dark green Pressler came second.
In the counties colored in bright green he came third.

Fun fact: In one county Weiland is only the fourth-placed finisher, i. e. last place.
Can you find it?
