When George Bush proposed cutting its entire budget, Rick Santorum went on national television in February and said he would not let that happen.  But then, when it came to a vote, Rick Santorum broke his promise and voted against Amtrak funding.

As if breaking his promise on Amtrak funding wasn't enough, after the vote Rick Santorum wrote in the Philadelphia Inquirer that he actually supports Amtrak funding:

"At a time when Amtrak is setting ridership records and as congestion at our airports and on the highways continues to increase, it would be a grave mistake to cut the federal funds that keep Amtrak operating."
--Rick Santorum, Op-ed, Philadelphia Inquirer, March 25, 2005

Tricky Ricky does the old flip-flop.

America's railroads need to be privatized. That's the real solution to all of this.

That isn't much of a defense.

Santorum says one thing and votes another way and THEN goes back to saying what he originally said(trusting that the electorate won't have time to pay attention to how he voted).  At last year's Republican National Convention they made a big deal about flip-flops.  Who knew they were talking about Santorum?

True ... but he shouldn't be lying about his position, should he?

Where are you on anything? You never add to the discussion. I didn't find it to be a big deal so I didn't comment.

Hmmm....interesting.  Although flip-flopping on Amtrak funding is hardly on a par with flip-flopping on the Iraq war, flip-flopping at all is never a good thing for a senator facing a tough re-election battle next year and a potential run for president in 2008.  Santorum might not want to build up too many of these minor issue flip-flops.

Acctually, I would arguee that flip-flopping won Kerry re-election plenty of times.  Look at his flip-flopping on whether he is Irish or not.  It's a different story every other election.

While not on par with the War In Iraq, flip-flopping on Amtrak funding is quite a big deal in Southeastern PA (where people actually ride Amtrak). The urban Northeast corridor is the only place Amtrak makes money, but funding is still a big deal.

Santorum is kissing any chances in the Southeast goodbye.  Even with Specter's backing, his chances are looking slimmer by the day.

What is he kissing good-bye??  He can't kiss goobye something he never had in the 1st place.  What he is doing however is just increasing turnout (which obviously hurts him)

Actually, he did have it in the first place. He won the SE (except Philly) in 2000.

I thought he lost in Montco.  Anyway I think we could all agree on is that Santorum (no matter what his position on Amtrak) will get crushed in SE PA in 06
