Both states have one large metropolitan city (Detroit Metro and Boston) surrounded by vast rural areas that are Republican voting.

Which is state is deader for the GOP?

The "vast rural areas" here are Democratic voting (also, not "rural" in any meaningful sense). They're more Republican than Boston, but nearly every municipality in the state has a D+ PVI. MA is (obviously) far tougher territory than MI for Repubs.

Massachusetts voted against Nixon ... so it's the right answer, haha.

Now, if you asked whether IL or MA is tougher, that might be a more interesting question.

With the suburbs and downstate (with a few exceptions), IL probably has a higher GOP floor, but Massachusetts moderates/moderate liberals seem to have more of a tradition-based affection for moderate Republicans.  Very interesting choice.

Massachusetts is harder for GOP. They haven't won a county in MA in a presidential election since 1988. Bush W. was competitive in MI both in 2000 and 2004 even though he lost the state both years.

Michigan can be won in a wave. Massachusetts would take the democrat eating babies regularly to vote GOP, and even then only maybe
