Socialism, imperialism, and eugenics...seems like a fairly HS combination to me.

FS for sure.

I have a generally positive view of British societies, though. I'm a member of of the Richard III Society, and objectively it is awesome. They send a lot of material that's directed at both an academic and general interest audience.

I've considered joining the Fabian Society, but never have. One for now is enough. Tongue

An organisation with a reasonable stated aims but used as a cloak for Elitist progressive/socialist Social Engineering distilled into policy ideas. Sinister undertones to the name as well.

An FF group, although cursed with the same fascination with eugenics that seemingly every turn of the century intellectual was afflicted with. Part of the dangers of technocracy/worship of the intelligentsia is the tendency to run away with plans without concern for morals beyond vague utilitarianism.

Anyway, it's not the socialist tradition that I'm rooted in and identify with, but it is one that I can respect, for all its occasional silliness. The eugenics business and the general crankish gullibility of the Webbs (c.f. the Soviet Union as a new and higher form of civilisation; urgh) and their acolytes shouldn't be ignored or excused but needs to be understood in its proper context; British intellectuals during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras were overwhelmingly supportive of eugenics irrespective of politics* and the era was highly conducive to absurd crankery...

*Certain religious types - again with a wide variety of political perspectives - excepted.
