1952 Presidential Conventions

With the conventions underway, both parties must choose who they shall field for the general election, and the candidates have been whittled down to those with the greatest support. President Taft, always having had a devoted base of support, now has not claimed the majority he needed to cruise through the nomination. Taft's most formidable opponent, General Dwight Eisenhower, has criticized the president on his foreign policy and has promised a new way forward. The incumbent president has become unpopular and is vulnerable enough to quite possibly be toppled in the final ballot. Over at the Workers' Party, Hubert Humphrey and Estes Kefauver are the only ones left standing after a handful of ballots. Humphrey is trumpeted by organized labor and has advocated for a wide range of liberal causes, such as food stamps, arms control, and civil rights. The coonskin-wearing Kefauver is another notable progressive within the party and has led the push in fighting for civil rights.
