He wasn't a great president by any means, but option 2 describes him much better than option 1

^This. Why do you believe Carter is/was a "terrible human being"?

Neither - he was a deeply underrated President and a great man.

Carter's economic reforms are perhaps among the most significant regulatory reforms enacted in getting the economy moving again. Nothing that has come since has been so nearly justified or effective.

I can see why someone might see him as sanctimonious, but his faith doesn't strike me as showy or self-serving as, say, Tony Blair's religious mania. I certainly can't see how he would be a horrible person, especially considering the typical megalomaniacs who manage to enter the office. The worst I can say about his problems, is he used his morals as a crutch to excuse hs failings as an executive.

Still, he did seem to want to do good in the world, which was a welcome change from the Nixon/Kissinger realpolitik that ran rampant before.

Good person, horrible President.

It's okay Jimmy, good people make horrible politicians anyway.

^ Yeah, I can see that.

I bet you his personality differed a great deal from all post WW2 presidents (JC was certainly homespun). When he first went into the WH, and I don't know if this changed or not, but he made it a policy that the place would be "dry," although it was known that people sort of brought their own or had a stash here or there, and it was unacceptable and uncouth not to at least serve champagne or wine at a state dinner. I'm tempted to vote option 2 on that. Tongue

Option 1.

Option 2  best applies to Nixon, or Clinton (though he's not really a terrible human being) in my opinion.
