The bird represents Sneakers O’Toole.  Just like everyone wanted Sneakers O’Toole to leave his sneakers behind, the Sanders crowd wanted the bird to leave Bernie’s podium behind.

The one difference being that the stakes are higher for the bird, seeing as how its refusal to leave the podium could result in the election of Hillary Clinton.  In contrast, what’s the worst that can happen for Mr. O’Toole?  People on the sidewalk get annoyed by his singing?
