This is how the elections would have gone if it wasn't for the rise of partisanship in recent years.

There was a major election in northern Kentucky for a Kentucky Supreme Court seat. It was on a nonpartisan ballot. The incumbent had been appointed to this seat by the governor following the retirement and death of its previous occupant. The challenger was hand-picked by the Tea Party and kept spouting the usual right-wing nonsense that goes with it.

This election was considered highly competitive. But the incumbent won by about 20 percentage points.

Remember, this was a nonpartisan election. This shows about how other elections would have turned out if it wasn't for the partisanship ginned up by the GOP in partisan races. When people get to judge things without party labels, we do much better - at least this time.

Look at how referendums turned out. It was pretty much the same thing there.

The incumbent was by far the less conservative candidate. And she was appointed before, so this was the first time she had to face the voters for this seat.
