Laura Ingraham isn't going to beat McCain. Are there any vocal Tea Party State Senators or Representatives in AZ?

Hayworth, but he lost against McCain. I'd have to do more research.

We need him to run so that no credible Republicans run for an open seat, and a Tea Partier get's in costing Pubs the seat.

Yeah is McCain unpopular now or something? Why would he lose a general election?

McCain is at 30% approval, heavily underwater amongst all parties (though his numbers among Democrats are higher than any Republican Senator at 30% should be)

McCain is better off switching parties and running as a Democrat from this point on.  AZ needs new blood in the GOP senate, aka another Cory Gardner.

The Democrats are used to taking bruised and battered Republicans. I actually think he might win a Dem primary.

Maybe not but he could switch to Democrat and win, McCain does have some left leaning policies that turn off the GOP that would usher in a primary challenger. Ben Nighthorse Campbell ran senator in 1992 as a Democrat and won 51% of the vote. He switched to Republican in 1995, then ran in 1996 and won 62% of the vote.  Such is a possibility, McCain could do it.

1992 Colorado senate election:

Campbell: 51%
Considine: 42%

1998 Colorado senate election:

Campbell: 62%
Lamm: 35%

I doubt McCain could win a primary as a Democrat. Specter lost his primary after a party switch, and he had a more liberal voting record than McCain has. His odds are marginally better if he sticks it out with the Republicans and goes scorched earth on whomever ends up his main challenger (or just threatens to do so to intimidate any serious competition, a la Lindsey Graham)

Dems definitely have a chance at this seat with presidential turnout, whether McCain is the nominee or not. Hopefully we can find a strong candidate here.

McCain would do far better in a Republican primary than a Democratic one.  We hate him even more than his own party Tongue

U.S. Rep. Trent Franks who's considered a potential challenger made an Akin-esque comment last year regarding rape, and as a Tea Partier himself, it's a win-win both ways for AZ Democrats in whoever wins the primary: a very unpopular incumbent or a gaffe-prone Republican. Please God let Franks vs. McCain happen. Tongue

I would really love to see Giffords run considering she's expressed interest in returning to the public sector ever since the incident, but idk if she would be willing to run if McCain escapes the primary. Her main priority is passing gun control, and McCain voted in favor of Manchin-Toomey so running off of that might not bode well. But who knows? Maybe she can be tempted to run based off of the very good chance McCain does get primaried by the right.

Carmona would be pretty hard to convince as well. I don't think he runs, sadly but AZ Dems still have a strong bench. I could see Stanton or Sinema running, but Dems will ultimately find somebody good while the GOP is doomed either way with whoever they nominate. Cheesy

While we should not nominate sure losers, we also should not run incumbents who are guarranteed to get primared like Specter and Lugar. That invites trouble and the one doing the primarying will likely not be the second coming of Pat Toomey.

I'm sure the GOP is "doomed", just like Ed Fitzgerald was going to beat Kasich in Ohio... Roll Eyes

I like McCain a lot, but I hope he retires so we can field someone better.

I would like to see Jan Brewer run, though she would likely only be a one termer. Sad
