Why would Christie feel compelled to resign as governor in order to run for president anyway?  Because as the sitting governor of New Jersey, Christie has regulatory authority over financial markets such that federal "pay-to-play" laws prohibit many Wall Street contributions from being made to him.  This is reportedly a big reason why Romney didn't name him as his running mate:

Citizens United makes campaign finance laws useless.

Is being Governor of New Jersey that much more intense than being Governor of Arkansas or Governor of New York or for that matter Governor of New Jersey a century ago?  Neither Clinton, FDR, or Wilson resigned as Governor while they were running for President.

Just as Hillary Clinton resigned from the Senate to run for President, and Bill Clinton resigned as Governor of Arkansas.

Hillary needed the senate salary to pay for therapy after the traumatic sniper incident in Bosnia.

Would these donor prohibitions affect Walker or any other governor? Or is it a NY/NJ thing?
It's more of a NY/ NJ thing, since those states have the closest ties to Wall Street.

Other Governors would be limited in their ability to seek donors among the wealhy of their home state, but it is worth noting that Perry did pretty well for himself as a sitting Governor.

Bill should've resigned then. Senate is different since they never actually do anything anyway.

Mike DuHaime (Christie's chief political strategist, who also worked for Giuliani in 2007/2008, and called Giuliani's lead in the polls "momentum-proof") confirms that Christie doesn't plan to resign as governor if he runs for prez:
