New Election:
2014 Tennessee Referendum General Election Results TN Amendment 1 - the most controversial item on our ballot this year. There were more votes cast in this race than in the Governor's or US Senate races. Note the substantial urban v. rural split. Almost every precinct in Nashville/Davidson Co. went for "no", regardless of partisan characteristics. Deeply Republican Knox and Hamilton counties joined the more Democratic counties in voting no.
In 2000, in Planned Parenthood v. Sundquist, the TN Supreme Court held that there is a stronger right to abortion in our state constitution than in federal law. This amendment neutralizes this decision, empowering the legislature to enact legislation that regulates abortion.
