He's actually a pretty good actor, surprise surprise. I guess he just did all those douchebagy romantic comedy roles a couple years ago because they were lots of easy paychecks.

To be fair though he never struck me as particularly arrogant as a person or likely to be defensive about all the joke roles in bad movies he did, this is actually probably pretty close to what would happen if you ever confronted him and told him they sucked.

Seeing as he now has an Oscar and almost everything he was in before that was crap, I wouldn't call him underrated.

Actually though the type of movies he was usually in previously played pretty well in Killer Joe, he made the title character all the more shocking because he was a brutal sociopath played by a guy mostly known for dumb romantic comedies, not a guy known for nasty villain roles.

I've only ever seen him in Contact from 1997, but my impression is that he's a cool guy (so FF), and Contact was a good movie. Better book, but a good movie.

Apparently a great actor who got typecast in mediocre roles for a while due to bad career decisions. He probably has always been good given that he appeared in movies like Amistad back in the 90s. But then he was subsequently reduced to his good looks. Tongue

Enjoyed his performances in Dallas Buyers Club, The Wolf of Wall Street (even though it was a very brief role), True Detective, and Interstellar.

Sometimes you've got to go back, to actually move forward. And no I'm not talking about reminiscing or chasing ghosts...

I voted FF because he was great in Killer Joe and he doesn't seem particularly obnoxious (but who knows with these people Tongue ).  That said, I think he's suddenly become an incredibly over-rated actor.  I haven't seen Interstellar yet so I can't comment on that.  However, as impressive as his weight loss for Dallas Buyers Club was, his overall performance was still pretty meh.  Good, but not Oscar-worthy or anything like that.  He was better in True Detective (itself a pretty good example of a good, but not great show), but even that performance wasn't the best thing since sliced bread like some seemed to think.  It wasn't even the best performance on the show; Woody Harrelson gave a far better performance which shouldn't be too surprising since he's a much better actor than McConaughey.

Lincoln Lawyer is one of the best movies I've ever seen.
