http://news.yahoo.com/former-long-time-u-congressman-phil-crane-dies-221411725.html

Former Congressman Phil Crane died Saturday at the age of 84.

Crane, a Republican from Illinois, spent 35 years in Congress, and briefly ran for President in 1979 and 1980, before being defeated by Melissa Bean in 2004. In Congress he's been responsible for the partial lifting of Singapore's chewing gum ban as part of a trade agreement, and for arranging the only to date public audit of the U.S Mint at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

RIP. He was 84, but this was still rather unexpected.

One of a fair few politicians that I know only due to President Forever (and maybe Wikipedia election articles). RIP.

I first heard of him from Wikipedia as well, and I frequently play as Crane in P4E 2008 as well Tongue.

RIP.

(But damn, Melissa Bean. Now that name's a blast from the past. Brings me back to the heady days of 2005, when a young Lief spent his days reading blogs on Daily Kos and looking forward to Howard Dean's 50 state strategy helping Democrats take back America.)

For the 2010 and 2014 elections, the Democrats decided that a lets get our asses kicked most places strategy would be better.

did anyone suspect that he was a john bircher? I suspected he was since he voted against SALT (one of only seven house members) and his association with people like John Ashbrook and Larry McDonald.

Typically the mark of level-headed governance.
