While this isn't news, what is more disturbing is that too many self-identified Democrats blame economically-disadvantaged African-Americans for their plight:

It is all still about race: Obama hatred, the South and the truth about GOP wins

If the lesson the Democrats take from 2014 is that white male senate candidates losing (or lagging Obama) in states Obama won twice = racism, then they absolutely deserve to be in the wilderness until 2022.

Don't you know that not blindly agreeing with the Democrats is racist? Logic be damned; blame everything on race!

I have, and I found it written out of spite and not well researched,  yes, some of the party's support come's from racist ass holes, but every party has those who are way out of the main stream.  The accusation that it the wave was propelled by racism is false.

Definitely a part of it. This election was the revenge of the white men, after being told for the past two years that they're demographically doomed and after how much they've suffered economically (relatively). The Ferguson business inflamed things and riled them up just as election season was beginning, and then the Republicans rode the wave of white male resentment home with a xenophobic campaign of amnesty, ebola and ISIS.

Ah Salon. It wasn't enough when you said that it was racist to say Wendy Davis lost the women's vote when she lost a majority of women in Texas, or had that article praising Putin, or when Joan Walsh posted that other article flabbergasted about economic insecurity while simultaneously blasting inequality.

Jindal. What a racist white guy.

More generalizations. More reasons to hate the left. Replace the word white with black and watch the uproar.

lol speaking of chutzpah

This article talks about evidence whites tend to blame blacks for black poverty, and that Republicans do so more than Democrats. Fair enough, but it provides no evidence at all that this was a major issue in the election, or that this was any worse now than it was in, say, 2006.

Salon is really the best out there now when it comes to real journalism.

Salon is basically the entire liberal media. While the rest of the media was too scared to criticize Bush at all for over a year after 9/11, they were running articles a day or two later about how people like Gary Hart repeatedly warned about Al Qaeda planning to attack, but were totally ignored by the Bush administration.

While it may be true that racism provided a rallying factor for a disproportionately-represented-in-mid-terms group, discussing this as anything other than an academic point isn't going to accomplish much. Coming away from an election with the attitude of "well, if only the rest of society weren't homophobic woman-hating racists we would've won" is smug and intellectually lazy. More than that, though, is that it doesn't win many allies. Democrats win with a coalition of groups, and obsessively running on accusing people of -phobias and -isms does not win many elections.

Whites, and white men in particular, are more than capable of voting for Democrats (and liberals in general) when the argument is compelling and tailored to their interests in a clear and concise manner. Obama's soft improvements in parts of South-Central Ohio in 2012 prove it's not impossible. When you actually make an effort, some people will actually listen.

47% of women voted for Republicans. So did 36%ish of hispanics and about 44% of people 18-24. These groups do not vote in lock-step, and something tells me 47% of women are not misogynists. It's time to get better at campaigning to all groups of people, and admit that Democrats did a really sh**ty job of selling their ideas (what ideas?) to voters in general, instead of circulating articles like this. You don't shame people into voting for you. That doesn't work.

Turnout matters, of course. If you had a more representative voting public I think results would've been more favorable. But not all of the people who stayed home did so because of voting laws. If they felt it was pointless, that's not their fault, it's the Democrats'.

So you need six seats to win the majority, you win nine, three out of which are in the South (Confederacy defined) and it is because South is racist that Democrats lost the Senate?

Grimes was a joke from the start, there was an article from way back in summer of 2013 that said she was regarded as such on the ground in the state. Capito was going to be unstoppable in WV regardless. Did racists pad the margins, of course, but the wins would still have been wins. Iowa, Colorado, Virginia, and New Hampshire all voted for Obama twice, and Republicans won 2 of those outright and came really close in the other two.

The notion that racism powered the victory, fails to account for a Republican Senate candidates winning Jefferson and Loudon counties for instance. Maybe a factor, but it is not the only reason.

I agree with Marokai and NC Yankee... the racists padded the GOP margins, as they do in every election, but pounding against the "racist/misogynist electorate" is only going to alienate moderate white/male voters who the Dems need to be competitive with, and who want to hear about non-identity politics-related pocketbook issues that actually matter to them. Incidentally, those same issues tend also to be relevant to minorities and women.
