So next year, Virginia has midterm elections for House of Delegates and State Senate. I figured I'd make a thread to keep everything in one place.

Kicking off this thread...

Apparently Speaker Bill Howell is being primaried by Susan Stimpson, a former candidate for Lieutenant Governor. Funnily enough, unless I'm just making things up, Howell backed Stimpson in her ill-fated bid.

This primary is because the "largest tax increase in Virginia's history," which was passed during Howell's Speakership.

Republicans currently hold 21 seats (thanks corruption).
I can see 2 potential targets for democrats:
-the R+1 seat, but the republican is a moderate, he voted for the repeal of the ultrasound bill (the only republican to do so)
-And there is a crazy in a R+3 seat.

Your thought MDVAVoter?

Why can't Virgina just be normal and hold their elections at the same times as everyone else?

In other news, Pat Mullins is stepping down as Chairman of the RPV.

The partisan composition in Richmond might not change much, but this is already looking like an interesting cycle in regards to the RPV's direction.

The thing with SD-13 is that while the Republican incumbent is over the top on social issues, the district did vote for Cuccinelli.

Gillespie clearly won SD-13.  Did Warner win SD-10?  McAuliffe did much better than Obama there, so the R incumbent could be on borrowed time.

So John Watkins is retiring. Senate control could get interesting now, since a very competitive district is open.

That's too bad.  He's been a great legislator.

I think he may be more crucial than Puckett was to any kind of Medicaid expansion.  Democrats need Republicans they can work with.

FWIW, looks like Puckett won't be dropping the soap in prison as there weren't any charges against him from the feds.

That Morrissey fellow is rather, uh, interesting.  Guess the Democrats need a chunk of the crazy as well.

Morrissey announced his resignation on Thursday, but he's going to be going for his party's renomination anyway.  The nominating process for the seat has caused some controversy, as it will be limited to about 100 Democrat "party members in good standing." The assumption seems to be that this will help keep Morrissey from being renominated, but also some are questioning whether the district's large African American community will be adequately represented by this process.

Why would he resign? I mean, he had a pretty sweet deal.

I believe Obama won that district?

In 2013, Comstock narrowly held Murphy off. I'm not surprised Murphy won this time.

As it was a Special Election, turnout was naturally low. But considering the poor weather and road conditions in Northern Virginia yesterday, turnout was probably even lower than it would have been on another day.

It's Joseph E. Preston who just held onto a vacated delegate seat. Top left is Kathy Murphy who picked up Comstock's delegate seat and top right is Susan Hippen who just kicked off her campaign for the 21st district with Northam, Councilwoman Hammond, and Fmr. candidate Suzanne Patrick last night.

It will be interesting to see if he is going to be as spectacularly effective as his West Virginia counterpart.
