In keeping up with the grand Unionist tradition of unseating incumbent presidents, President Lodge was narrowly defeated by the insurgent Senator Bricker for the nomination, ultimately failing to convince delegates to keep him for a full term. Defeated, Lodge accepted the results and called for the party to unite around Bricker, but did not rule out making another run in the future. Bricker would be accompanied by Indiana Governor George Craig on the ticket, popular in his home state as a reformer. The general election has all the signs of a hotly contested race, with a polarizing figure representing the AU and a better organized campaign from the WP's repeat nominee. Bricker is running as a staunch conservative, opposing any further government involvement in the economy and proposing national "right-to-work" legislation to "curb communist influence." Bricker generally has a non-interventionist mindset on foreign matters but is deeply anti-communist and has been a fierce supporter of upholding American sovereignty, notably holding disdain for the United Nations. Senator Kefauver and his running mate Governor Williams are running a progressive campaign through and through, always outspoken. Civil rights is a major aspect of Kefauver's campaign and he has pledged to scrub out "separate but equal" as a legal norm in parts of the country. Notable for holding a hearing on organized crime in the early part of the decade, Kefauver wants to crack down on the Mafia and other crime syndicates. In addition, anti-monopoly and public safety measures are other planks in his platform.

Kefauver wins this. The next election will probably come by Friday night. Fun times are ahead.

So sorry, school suddenly got me really busy so this got sidetracked. You can expect 1960 to likely come tonight now, though.
