Would the Agriculture Secretary and former Iowa governor make a good vice presidential candidate for Hillary Clinton or whoever the Democratic presidential nominee is, or should he run against Chuck Grassley for Senate in 2016?

He appeals to working class voters who the Democrats need. He has a working class message that would fit a Warren or Clinton or O'Malley ticket. He could flip Missouri, maybe Arkansas and other places.

Not with Hillary or Biden. With Obama as an unpopular as he is, they can't afford to pick another Obama cabinet member.

For another Democrat, like a Warren or an O'Malley, this could be a solid pick, but not a game-changer.

"We are the USDA. Without us, people would be eating dirt or chairs!"

I would more than welcome him on a ticket. That would be an entertaining campaign.

Vilsack's last shot at relevance will be if Branstad retires in 2018. Grassley is not getting unseated. Beating Ernst in 2020 may be too late.

People in Iowa are irrelevant nationally and winning Iowa is of little importance to the map. Appealing to Iowa is so different from appealing to any other state. That's why those who do well in Iowa Caucuses so rarely do well on a national level (Obama being the obvious exception)

Too old for Hillary.

Excellent choice for someone younger who isn't a white guy: Julian Castro, Kirsten Gilibrand, Amy Klobuchar or Cory Booker.

Vilsack could help the white-working class vote than any other potential veep choice.

Vilsack will help as much as Edwards did in 2004. Clinton should find someone exciting in contrast to Obama who was himself exciting but needed a more experienced/established VP.

Vilsack would be an excellent choice for Jim Webb. Midwestern, folksy like Webb, and more liberal than Webb. Could be a home run for the Democratic Party.

In the 0.1% chance a man wins the Democratic nomination, they will basically HAVE to pick a female VP.

I disagree. Most feminists would rather win, and advance Women's rights through a a Democratic President and possible Democratic Congress rather than simply have a women on the ticket (One reason why McCain/Palin didn't improve much with the women's vote

Iowa Rep. Dave Loesback wants Vilsack to be the vice presidential running mate for Clinton in 2016. It's possible. He adds Iowa to Clinton and could help in the Midwest.

That part might not be true. There are arguments that running mates get more of a home state bounce if they come from smaller states.

There may be situatins where four points in Iowa may end up being more important than one point in Virginia.

It might be that smaller state politicians tend to be more popular, and it's possible Vilsack won't help in that category, since he's been in the Cabinet so long. His last election was in 2002 (although Jeb Bush is hoping that's enough on the Republican side.)
