I've noticed this one come up a lot in the Pocahantas thread, so instead of continuing the comparison and derailing from the epic/sucky ness of the merits of Pocahantas, let's bring stuff about Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame here.

Personally I see it as a freedom movie, if only for the credits theme here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMs5bxGTvAg

Other than the "Hellfire" song, HA for utterly butchering the original work.

Never watched it. My big Disney years kinda began to dissipate after 1995.

I can only imagine the meeting where the existence of Hunchback was revealed to Disney execs. After the failure of Pocahontas, I can imagine Disney higher-ups were positively thrilled to hear the next feature film was based on a sprawling foreign novel about rape and appreciation of gothic architecture.

Needless to say, the changes needed for the format produce an entirely different piece of work to its source; but even then it's pretty dark fare for Disney. Plus the soundtrack is probably the best non-Ashman/Menken Disney soundtrack around (Frozen is a close 2nd). If it weren't for George Costanza and his crew of annoying sidekicks, this would be my favourite Disney movie of all time.

NB: The Hunchback stage show supposedly removes a lot of the goofiness

It's a good movie, but Disney really hurt their bottom line attempting it.

Ashman was dead, but Menken did the music for this movie.

It could've been a great film, but the gargoyles ruined it with their kiddie humor.  Yet another casualty of Eisner's later years.

I think it's fcked up that they decided to make a kids movie based on a story which is about rape, misery and superficiality. The book is great though.

^^
The movie disturbed me then, and it disturbes me now. I could read the book and not think a thing, but the Disney move just seemed dark.
