Yeah this is all bogus and based on current trends that allows no real commitment by either side.

What a joke.

But when the planet is cooler in 2030 than today despite rising co2 emissions, this agreement will be long forgotten.

This is a really positive step, and also happens to be a huge embarrassment to Tony Abbott. Smiley

If China can do this without democracy, then so can America with its dying democracy.

The US-side of the deal appears to be just an adjustment to account for the most recent data for CAFE and the natural gas boom. China's commitment appears to be 1000GW of alternative power (probably nuclear), which will only slow the rate of CO2 increase.

If Democrats aren't giving away manufacturing jobs to clean up the US economy, I suppose we can count this as a win.

Eh, treaties like this are MUCH easier agreed on (and implemented) in a one-party system like the Chinese than in America ( especially with the newly-elected Congress)

Very promising (and certainly an embarrassment for Tony "Coal" Abbott), although China is a tricky beast to deal with.

Thermal coal should really be declared a public menace at this point.

We really have more in common with China than we Americans, Canadians and Europeans think.

You have effectively been trolled by Obama and Xi.  Literally doing nothing will meet the contents of this agreement... Yet it is hailed as some incredible break through.  Please.

I'm extremely skeptical that China will prioritize curtailing emissions ahead of steady GDP growth anytime over the next decade.

Think about how much they have to import to make CO2 emissions; however, they are probably baiting the West into providing technological assistance.

With this "deal" they don't have to cut anything at all and are allowed to pollute more and more until 2030....at which point they wont have to do anything then either because they can ignore it if they want to.  AND they're always making promises (as shown in my earlier post) yet the place is just getting dirtier and dirtier.  I'm not sure why people are celebrating this as some kind of victory for Obama or the environmental movement, it's not either of those things.  Not even close.

Too little too late, defining success downward, etc.

However, still a Freedom Agreement because the optics of US and China making the right noises rather than using each other as an excuse removes the single largest stumbling block to multilateral negotiations (and one of the biggest concern troll talking points), which is a prerequisite to further progress.  In other words, it's a good first step.  Kudos.

I have no doubt that China will uphold their end of the agreement. The Chinese government is fully aware of the economic constraints posed by environmental degradation. In more developed/affluent Chinese cities, the Chinese government enforces rigid standards against polluters. In impoverished/rural China, the Chinese government looks the other way to speed up development.

The Chinese government will pursue this policy objective with or without the cooperation of the US. As China's economic model transitions from an export-driven manufacturing towards an economy more reflective of developed nations, rampant air pollution and degraded farmland will become more costly.

Yes, but not thanks to its current government.

It is nice to live in the most Labor friendly electorate in the country, also. Cheesy
