Great map! It was heart-breaking to see so many of the good southern Democrats I wanted get shut out so early in the night. Sad

The GOP didn't win the Senate until Iowa was called.  Republicans needed 51, not 50, to win control.

Perdue = 49
Roberts = 50
Tillis = 51
Ernst = 52

Okay, but as I recall from that night, all three of MSNBC, Fox News and CNN announced that the GOP had won the Senate when Iowa was called.  Why is that, if this is the correct timeline?

For some reason, AP held off on calling Iowa for about 20 mins after most networks did. I agree that most networks called the Senate for the GOP when Ernst was declared the winner, and most networks had Tillis as #52 --- my personal preference is using the AP call times, and that's what this timeline follows.

I know a lot of the races were obvious from the start, but why do they call a lot of races so early? It always seemed odd to me how they know any race will go when only 1% to 2% of precincts have been reported. I think Virginia this year serves as proof of that.

Thar would have been an upset.  Unfortunately he failed to move to Texas by election day, and so is stuck being a representative from Michigan for another 50 years.
