Take that, Corker and Haslam. They didn't want UAW - well, I guess they got their wish. Now any union can come into the Scenic City.

The more I got to thinking about this, the more I'm worried. For starters:

http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2014/nov/13/labor-groups-support-new-vw-policyvolkswagen/?businesstnvalley

There's a "local union" known as ACE that's being funded by unknown individuals, which is trying to aim to take the wind out of any of the other major unions' potential memberships. It wouldn't surprise me if this isn't some subversive right-wing attempt to suppress organizing.

Secondly, the fact that there are "three tiers" of union representation and the fact that multiple unions will be presented will likely prevent any one union (and therefore, all the workers) from having effective representation at the company.

This is a perfect example of conservative big government. If BMW wants their workers to be unionized, they should have the right to do so. This is a rare incident where I will take the side of a union.

But muh free enterprise! Muh jerb creators! Muh jerbs!

Hopefully the Republicans who still believe in our Constitution and in free markets will step in and keep private companies from enacting socialist-inspired human resources policies.

Yes, the Southern opposition to unions is more grounded in their legacy of slavery than any desire to see the free market 'flourish.'

This is a good opportunity for the UAW to get a foot in the door and win over the trust of the local workers. Them not having that trust was a big reason for their defeat earlier this year. What this really shows is that international cooperation, such as between UAW and Germany's IG Metall union, works. Labor movements have to be organized industry-wide to succeed, and in a tradeable goods sector such as automobiles, these days that means worldwide.

Doesn't it rather defeat the purpose of unions if there is more than one at the same plant? It means people are not united...

A union member is a Democratic voter, and a well-functioning unionized plant in the heart of the South may start giving other working-class people dangerous thoughts. There's a reason the GOP was so opposed to this, despite what the company wants.

Production workers and clerical workers might have very different interests.

Germany is one of the most union-friendly countries in the world, perhaps as a consequence of the victorious Allies finding industrial workers the most reliable opponents of fascism. Nazi Germany outlawed labor unions except those affiliated with the Party, and German workers got the economic equivalent of rape. To this day, German unions are politically influential enough to compel German firms to fit German political norms elsewhere.
