Definitely the snake.  We had a pet snake at our frat house in college named Camden.  "The feedings" were amongst some of the more anticipated house events.  One time he got into my buddy's dresser drawers and we couldn't get him out because snakes have the ability to tense their body up and hang on to anything.  Being 100% muscle, even a small one like that became near impossible to move once he intertwined himself in the dresser.  Cool creatures.

Spiders are just scary and useless, and rats don't have the capacity to return affection, which is what you want to a degree with a mammalian pet.

Definitely rat. I generally don't mind snakes, but I wouldn't want one as a pet. As for a tarantula, I cannot stand spiders at all in any form.
