Erdogan is pretty bad (labour record, anti-secularisation, autocratic) but he has done some good as far as infrastructure, education, Kurdish/minority rights and eroding the anti-democratic instincts of the army.

I would accept Viktor Orban as worse, but at least he is competent.

Isn't being criticised by Malcolm Fraser sort of like being beaten with a wet flannel?

He's not perfect, but he's got balls. Plus, I was pretty happy for the time I was living in AUS.

Anyone who would forego living in Australia because of Tony Abbott is incredibly misguided.

A bigoted and mostly incompetent Prime Minister who's eroded everything liberal about the Liberal Party and who I believe will make terrible damage to the Australian centre-right for a generation.

Tony Abbot is the perfect opposition leader. He's ruthless, opportunistic, and wickedly effective at breaking down and tearing apart his opponents, but terrible at filling the shoes of national leader once he's successfully terminated them.

I take it from the comments in this thread that he is basically the Australian version of George W. Bush.  Or at least that's how the more left-of-center posters here would have you believe.

Is that a fair assessment?

No Bush had charm, some sort of likability. He's more like Dick Cheney, with Santorum's social views.

By liberal, they mean classically liberal.
