Yeah, King's story is from the Huainanzi, a second century Chinese text.  Might be my favorite story.

Mary Landrieu only needs one more vote to pass Keystone (over President Obama's likely veto) in this lame-duck session.

Just veto it. It doesn't do any good and people will forget about it by 2016. Landrieau is dead anyhow.

I'd be very disappointed if Obama didn't.

I've always believed Keystone will not be approved without a) Harper's reelection next year b) GOP WH in '16.

Victory for Environment, end of reliance of fossil fuels, anyhow, should there be a G O P prez Jeb, more likely than the other G O P candidates, there is no 60 vote thresehold to withstand a filibuster, and it wont pass a reconciliation test. So, it will become A N W R

Yes, my memory slipped... but regardless it still needs a GOP WH. Unless Hillary makes a show of stiff-arming greenies for us.

Landrieu got exactly the 59 Senators who had already spoken in favor of it... who else did Mary think she could sway? or was this all just done so she could vote in favor of Keystone XL before her runoff, regardless of its outcome?

Surely no one expected the Democrats to cave now, did they? The time to do this would have been a month ago. There's just no point in taking our lumps for not supporting it and then flip-flopping when it's too late to take advantage.

There were rumors of Durbin surprising people. Beyond that, I don't know.

I'm surprised. I assumed this was a Landrieu bailout bill, and that Landrieu wanted this to all happen so she could showcase her prowess in energy issues. I also think she wanted a veto to showcase how she was independent from the president.

The fact this failed 59-41 makes me happy, because now Cassidy goes from likely to a lock on the 54th Senate seat.

Everyone says that. But this is Mary Landrieu and I saw this whole thing as a ploy to make whites vote for her in significant enough numbers to re-elect her. I don't think anyone can (until this failed) discount Mary Landrieu. You can't underestimate someone who has repeatedly survived political and electoral threats that would take out other politicians.

She's an extremely skilled retail politician who has outrun demographics consistently for decades. She's also a very skilled Louisiana politician who has cultivated a strong home state image and set of connections in Louisiana.

FWIW, I do not believe Cassidy is that great of a politician. He's been described as dry, uncharismatic, and so on. He will probably win at this point, but I'm pretty sure that this is a case of Generic R beating Mary Landrieu. I still expect her to overperform the fundamentals of the state winning 45-48% of the vote.
