Nothing could ever fully make up for the loss of Begich, but this is a solid consolation prize.

Now that he lost the Lt. gov. race, do you think Dan Sullivan might try to join the other Dan Sullivan in the Senate?

I'm very happy this happened. I don't care much one way or another about Parnell, but Walker should be a great governor for Alaska.

You guys remember the 2009 thread speculating whether Sean Parnell is going to be a future presidential contender?

Damn. Imagine if Parnell (who was supposed to be the best Republican recruit) ran against Begich. Sad

Is there a reason why Parnell lost in a Republican tsunami year?
Did he himself do anything wrong, or was it Walker's own strength?

He tried to cover up sexual assault in the Alaska National Guard.

Some of both. Parnell was hit hard by the Alaska National Guard sex scandal, but Walker was uniquely positioned to take advantage of that. Walker is a former Republican (ran against Parnell in 2010 primary) who, while quite conservative on social issues, ran a unity campaign with the Democratic challenger Mallott by running on their common economic policies. They ran a very positive campaign, something quite different from the constant stream of negative stories in October/November about the Parnell administration.

Beside, Alaska politics is quite locally oriented and, hence, less influenced by nationwide waves.

My final gubernatorial prediction map had Parnell hanging on, despite Walker being up in most of the polls; yet not Brownback and Scott. Tongue

Should be interesting to see how this cooperates with the Republican legislature, Alaska has never had an Independent Governor nor a Democratic Governor since 2002.

Seems in recent years that Independent Governors don't stay Independent for very long.

I have to wonder if he'll switch back to being Republican at some point.

You're certainly not alone on that.
