I find cardiology interesting. I think cardiologist have interesting jobs, although it's something I don't plan on becoming. I might though.

I ask this mainly because I have a lot of doctors in my family (including my dad).

How about you guys?

I considered going in to medicine a number of times (though I suppose it's never too late). My primary interest in medicine is in psychiatry and pathology.

Since no one seems interested in the topic of what they think is the most interesting medical speciality, I decided to change up the question a bit.

It never interested me, really. The only skill I particularly possess well is the ability to "play pretend". It's why I went into acting.

I considered going into radiology to work with the then new (1980's) field of medical imaging after completing my physics PhD. Timing worked out better for particle physics research so that's where I went.

I was put off by how long the school/training was (4 years med school + 4 or more of residency) and the general unpleasantness of dealing with hospital administrators and insurance companies and all that. My dad is a physician and I think he's a case study of what happens when people go into medicine more to please their parents than out of any real love for the profession.

No, my habits are not befitting of someone in the medical profession. Besides, I'm more personally interested in history, literature, and theology.

I'm a humanities guy, but I've considered going into ophthalmology just to learn more about the eye.

This, though perhaps a non-surgical specialization.  But my hands-on skills are frankly pretty awful.  Still, I'm fine just as a physics teacher.

I have considered it.  I really like the idea of being able to help heal someone, and I think I would have a good mind for diagnosis.  However the whole guts and bodily fluids thing presents an insurmountable barrier for me.

I did want to, but my 10th grade maths teacher told me my maths wasn't strong enough and that I shouldn't bother.

I considered being an RN when I was younger (for the $s not for any good reason), but I knew I couldn't hack the blood, poop, other fluids and people dying on me all the time.

Those are my biggest put offs as well. I'd hate to be in school for that long and plus dealing with the insurance companies would suck. Ugh. The on-call schedule, the long hours (this depends on your speciality though), the very significant student loans (hundreds of thousands of dollars), and the stress of someone's life being on your hands are also downsides.

Some upsides though include the great pay. Doctors can make anywhere between $150,000 to $700,000 a year (depends on speciality). The respect doctors recieve and the fact that you're saving lives (depends on speciality) are also upsides. Medicine is also great if you have an interest in anatomy (which I somewhat do, but it's not my main interest).

Nah. I'm not particularly interested in the life sciences, the education time is too long for a guy who wants to have children quite young, and they tend to be workaholics. Accounting is my field, and I'm sticking with it.

I still toy with the idea of studying pharmacology or pharmacy but I'm unwilling to make a commitment. Kind of like the last ten years.

Not really. There are things I'd like less but I've never really been a biology person. It always struck me as a field primarily of memorizing as much as possible. That and the Pre-Med students were always among the very worst to deal with in any class I had to take with them. They had a penchant of not showing up for class ever, copying their homework out of the solutions manual, bombing the exams, and then pitching the world's biggest fit whenever the professor didn't give them all an 'A' because, after all, they are entitled to med school admittance and their grades are of utmost importance. From my experience the people who actually got into med school tended to be a lot better though.

Also, I have an inability to watch people being cut into. I can handle blood, gunshots, gore, explosions, vaccinations, etc. just fine. But for some reason the thought of cutting into someone just makes me melt. I'm clearly not cut out of that.
