George Clooney is the obvious choice.

You mean besides the fact he has no qualifications whatsoever?

haha.  Okay, you want a serious response.  If I were a member of Team Obama, then I'd remind him that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to name his successor (and stick it to Team Clinton good!)

There are a few choices.  Governors usually make for good presidential candidates.  O'Malley, Rendell, and Schweitzer all have baggage.  As does Webb.  How about Cuomo?  Or Quinn?  Actually, I like Quinn very much.  He has the stank of loser on him now, but that may rub off, and anyway after two years as a Vice President it may not matter.

Some thought should go into it because it's a chance to circumvent Hillary Clinton, and that is very important.

So you're saying your a psychopath?

A.J. Balukoff actually might make a good pick. He has great Education chops.

Probably doesn't want to pick anyone who might use it as a stepping stone for a 2016 run so that Hillary will have it easy. It also will not be a woman so that Hillary can still have the first female momentum

My best is an older, established Senator who could get the votes in the Senate. Chuck Schumer could be a possibility, especially since he could just run for his seat in 2016 and take it right back. Ron Wyden also comes to mind.

What about Russ Feingold?

I know he probably doesn't need it, but it'd give him a national spotlight ahead of a potential run at Ron Johnson in 2016. More important, I think he might have enough connections in the senate to pass confirmation. He'd certainly get all the democrats, and I believe several republicans liked him personally.

I think it'll be a Senator who is already on his way out. Blumenthal if he retires in a sort of shocking Johanns fashion.

Most likely the Clintonistas force him to choose someone who has zero desire of running for President in 2016. Someone who recently retired might make the most sense then. Maybe Harkin.

He would never get Senate confirmation.
