Better than its reputation around here (very low bar..). Voted FS as a bona fide contrarian.

This looks like a load of right-wing propaganda to me.

Taxes is a factor for sure, but Wyoming, Louisiana, Mississippi are ranked low, so its not a trivial red state/blue state dichotomy.

http://freedominthe50states.org/how-its-calculated

Plenty of strongly Republican states are ranked low, yeah, but practically no strongly Democratic states are ranked high.

Their categories seems mostly to be based on a libertarian definition of freedom, which is why I was surprised Oklahoma scores so well.

I'm curious how a state where you can't even buy alcohol on Sundays ranks #1.

All horrible states in this nation vote Republican, but not all Republican states are horrible states. Texas, North Carolina, and Alaska have their charms.

When the metric weighs "Freedom from Tort Abuse" as its #2 criteria for FF state...

Clearly a HS.

But hey, the University of Oklahoma is there, which is a very good school, but what can you do that it's in OK? (rhetorical question) I toured a rare book collection there a few years ago during the summer and was very impressed.

I know someone at OU, and he says you're okay if you don't leave campus / the Norman area. Tongue

What may I ask does Texas have to offer? One summer I was determined to see Carlsbad Caverns, so I drove the entire length of Texas. Can't say I saw anything charming. Dallas-Fort Worth seemed like a super generic SunBelt metro, El Paso was much nicer than Ciudad Juarez, granted, but that's about the lowest bar imaginable. Everything in between (and to the east of Dallas too) was an endless cow pasture, with the occasional abandoned trailer or gas station. Here's a photo I took from inside the car, because in Texas, it doesn't really pay to stop. It just makes the state that much longer.

Carlsbad is awful. Caverns are terribly overrated. There's a lot of Texas that blows, but there's some great spots.

Palo Duro Canyon is a great area for outdoors types. Austin is one of the best cities in America, and I'm not really talking about the hipster liberal people, the river and the atmosphere is quite nice. Galveston is an interesting place to visit. The food is terrific. Everyone is very friendly. Weather is just the right mix of Southern heat and Western dryness. Their universities are also really solid.

Second most horrible state (sane).

Btw, why do so many users have a green OK avatar? I can't remember that Oklahoma is famous for its Green Party...

We are mourning the loss of our dear friend Mechaman.

Was he a member of the Green Party of Oklahoma before his death?

Last time I checked, Democrats usually do pretty well in the horrible cold places, like New England and the upper Midwest.
