The Democratic Party is center right, while the Republicans are right wing extremists
I'm in a bit of a mockery mood today.

Just a few months ago you were saying the Dems were left-wing extremists.

(I agree with you now, btw.)

The Democratic Party is the left-wing of American politics and encompasses a left-wing of a sort, but its official positions are not particularly left-wing and recent decades of Democratic government have only really been left-wing in rhetoric (and not even very consistently, in this case) and around the margins.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-wing_politics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centre-left

From people who say the Democrats aren't, I get the vibe they usually mean something along the lines of supporting a European-style welfare state, because apparently European politics and economics is now the golden standard to which all political parties around the world must be held against (Euro-centrism is getting old, and this comparison is really stupid especially when you've got parties that could be considered left wing on economics but socially conservative and hate gays, abortion, and immigrants, which is something I must've missed at the DNC convention in 2012).

They're just mad that the Democrats occasionally have to compromise in our two-party system, and aren't more aggressive in pushing for more government intervention, if not outright democratic socialism.

They're a center-left party, so yes, they're left-wing.

HAHA NO!
5 years ago they were slightly right of centre. Now, they are at least centre right and awfully close to far right.

Even socially it's a very authoritarian party despite the large number of Internet leftists trying to convince us otherwisr. I laugh when people say that socialism is no longer a dirty word in this country. The internet just makes socialist southerners realize that there's others like them - doesn't make them significant.

...far right? Really? You can do better.

Yes, they are the more left-wing major American political party. Trying to
measure left-wing vs. right-wing on some sort of worldwide political spectrum is pointless.

The dumbest thing about it is that people who try to use that sort of standard are quite ignorant about it. Virtually every criticism of the Democratic Party about being incompetent or unable to accomplish its agenda applies even moreso to most European left parties. I mean is any non-troll ever going to argue that Francois Hollande is some sort of left wing hero?

They are on the right end of centre right. Almost the same as the UK Conservative Party.
That's pretty different from far-right

Nope, McGovern was the final time they were genuinely leftist, and the defeat of Mondale pretty much ended any ounce of centre-leftism. DLC has kept them centre-right since

They are simply left compared to the GOP.

Until the platform calls for nationalized healthcare, an end to capital punishment, foreign policy that resembles at least 41's...the party has no business masquerading as leftist by any stretch of the imagination.

In comparison to the Republicans, certainly. I don't like comparing them to European leftists since America and Europe have wildly different political systems.

Even by American standards the Democratic Party is centrist. Obviously by European standards they'd be center-right.

The Democratic Party is not left-wing but it has many left-wing sensibilities and a large number of genuinely leftist politicians.

By US standards? Yes.
By my standards? Yes for the most part, they'd be centre-left overall as a whole.
By a lot of other nations' standards? No.

Barack Obama's first two years were far more progressive than Hollande's.

This is a good point. Obama has actually been considerably more progressive and anti-austerity than most left-wing world leaders, with the obvious exception of the Latin American leftists.
