http://politicalwire.com/2014/11/20/incoming-nevada-speaker-left-a-paper-trail/

The Reno News and Review dug up the past writings of Nevada Assembly speaker-designate Ira Hansen (R) which would make him “one of the most controversial speakers in Nevada history.”

“While members of the GOP caucus talked about a united front, they selected as speaker a legislator who is one of the most contentious public officials in the state. Hansen doesn’t like blacks, gays, Israel, many Republicans, and most Nevadans—he once wrote that newcomers to the state, who constitute four of every five Nevadans, should accept Nevada as it is or leave.”

Here are a couple choice quotes:

On race: “The relationship of Negroes and Democrats is truly a master-slave relationship, with the benevolent master knowing what’s best for his simple minded darkies. For American blacks, being denied choice and forced to attend the failing and inferior government school system is a form of involuntary servitude. Let’s call it what it truly is—educational slavery.”

On women: “Today, when Army men look at women in the ranks with ’longing in their eyes’ it very well may constitute ’sexual harassment.’ The truth is, women do not belong in the Army or Navy or Marine Corps, except in certain limited fields.

Sounds like a mainstream Republican.  What's the issue here?

You've got to be the biggest tool on this board besides KCDem ... funny that you're both partisan Democratic foot soldiers.

As for this new speaker, sounds like a whacko.  Embarrassing that they'd elect him.

^You can lay off the personal attacks, dude. Glass house meet stones.

You guys both talk about registered Republicans like they're these vile, heartless beings rather than folks who might just disagree with your uniformly liberal political views.

I encourage you to meet other "registered Republicans".

It's all good now. The total whackjob racist is now only assistant majority leader.

On the whole, I think Sandoval going full reverse Cuomo as was briefly discussed would have been a vastly better outcome.

Fiore pissed off Adelson by a) dropping in unannounced and begging 20 minutes for a selfie b) falsely claiming to caucus she had his full support c) lying about Anderson. He found the whole thing "creepy."

Just ignore him at meetings and give him a fancy title. He's an annoying man who should not matter to Nevada politics.

Coalition inbound: Fiore says she's heard a meeting will be held on the 22nd where dissident Pubs will join Dems to elect a new speaker, presumably outgoing Dem Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick. Fiore's also lost her leadership of the taxation committee. The policy reason why Sandoval wants this is the tax hike he wants to fund his priorities, and Kirkpatrick's been negotiating with him and Roberson on it for a while.

Wonderful news! Try as they might, the good people of Nevada can't get rid of their horrible, horrible state Democratic Party.

Fiore has been removed as majority leader and tax chairman, with 2 moderates taking her place for those respective slots. Sandoval will still need a lot of luck for his tax package, though...
