Highly unlikely, but with an exceptional Repubican nominee, a near-perfect gaffe-less campaign, absolutely no or very few mentions of religion, and a disastrous Democratic nominee/campaign, and Vermont could potentially be in play. However, if Republicans won 49 states in 2016, Vermont would be my guess as the sole state the Democrat took.

Alaska voters are very independent, they voted for both an independent and a third-party governor, they voted for a write-in candidate, and most Republicans up there are libertarian-leaning.
Alaska was Hillary's second worst state in the 2008 primaries, and in case the GOP nominates a teabagger, the Alaskans could go for an alternative, couldn't they?

The type of white, rural voter in Vermont is different from the type of white, rural voter from the South, which are the ones swinging more and more Republican.

It could of course happen, is the Democratic nominee is revealed to be a pedophile or a murderer.

Or if the parties changes places within the next two years, and the GOP becomes the party of northeastern liberals and the Democrats turn into the party of conservative white southerners.

Just because Vermont is mostly white doesn't mean it will go Republican.

Well, if both Democratic and Republican nominees are removed from the ballot then yes, Libertarians would have a shot Tongue

Based on how the state votes locally I think it would flip to the GOP sooner than most think, but yeah, barring a complete landslide, it will stay Democratic.

Best case scenario would be the Libertarian running a one-state campaign and devoting all their energy to visiting every random little Alaskan village and blanketing the airwaves with TV ads.

Yeah, the state has socialized oil, after all. The state is big on public-funded projects; that's part of what made Palin so popular prior to 2008. Sure, they barely voted to legalize marijuana, but that hardly makes it libertarian nowadays.
