No state is libertarian. Libertarianism is a fringe ideology supported by at very best just 10% of the country.

Indeed, Alaska is not a "libertarian state". It has a strong independent tilt, so I can see the state voting for a strong independent presidential candidate, assuming said candidate enjoys Perotesque levels of support at the latter's prime.

Otherwise, it's still a Republican stronghold in presidential races.

If democrats spent all their GOTV money on getting democrats to move to Wyoming, maybe. It'd be the free state movement in reverse.

They should try that, a mere 200k-300k would be enough for those sorts of states.

The Governor-elect of Alaska is Bill Walker. He's the opposite of what libertarianism is.

The only way that it could happen would be if the Republicans nominate a fairly liberal ticket like Charlie Baker/Larry Hogan and if the Democrats nominate a conservative ticket such as Zell Miller/Jim Cooper. Even then, Vermont might still be pretty close.

It could of course happen, is the Democratic nominee is revealed to be a pedophile or a murderer.

Or if the parties changes places within the next two years, and the GOP becomes the party of northeastern liberals and the Democrats turn into the party of conservative white southerners.

Even if that happened, the parties would not be switching places.  Two voting blocs would simply change their allegiances.  No political parties have ever done something as ridiculously simple as "switch places" in the history of the world.

As nice as that would be, it's almost certainly not going to happen. A state doesn't go for one party by a 36 point margin in one election and then switch parties in the next election. I also think the Chris Christie argument isn't solid. I'm assuming that you say Christie has a shot in Vermont because he's from the Northeast and is moderate, but if that's the case, why didn't Romney carry Vermont in 2012? Race/region aren't the only factors that affect peoples' vote.

Yes, this is how it could work:

Paul: 35%
Clinton: 34%
Sanders: 30%

Socialist Alternative is looking at some sort of cooperation with the Greens and other progressive groups for 2016--if Bernie doesn't run in the general as an Independent, I have a hunch the nomination will go to Howie Hawkins.
