While special elections proved to be a problem last selection, this creates a new problem - too much executive power over the Assembly. This isn't my Assembly - it's the people of the Northeast's. And if a vacancy lasts for more than a month of the term, I believe that we should give that power to the people.

I support this, and it fulfills one of the platforms I had in my gubernatorial campaign. I'll propose an amendment later to set the regulations for holding the special elections.

I move that the bill be substituted with the following amendment:

That looks good to me, Barnes.

I'd voiced an interest for a similar provision back when we legislated this issue in the previous session but I didn't get around to writing it up.

This is well-written and should be adequate. The status-quo of weekly elections was too much, but in the event that there's a more immediate vacancy I don't mind a special-election provision. Grin

I take that as an endorsemt. It's all very well to want to do something, but if you don't actually explain how to do it, then the whole system breaks down, like it usually does.

For the record my statements were an acceptance of Barnes' amendment as friendly.

Never really been one for formalities.

The voting period is now over. This bill now goes to the governor for his signature or veto.
