I don't see how anyone cannot see the reality that the police in this country are enemies of the people and seem to believe they have a license to kill. I've always been opposed to the death penalty, but the continued homicidal police forces in this country are really starting to make me think otherwise.

So, police are supposed to wait to have a gun pointed at them?  Remember, they didn't necessarily know this was a toy.

You just can't reach for a gun when you're around cops.  You should treat cops like people who might shoot you without a good reason.  You shouldn't look at them, you shouldn't talk to them and you shouldn't mess around with fake guns near cops for God's sake.  And kids in places like Cleveland should never have toy guns, it's way too dangerous.

One child is shot by a police officer=every single police officer in the United States is an 'enemy of the people' and should be killed.

An interesting line to take. In truth, its unfortunate when things like this happen, and it is indeed true that the officer in question was probably overzealous in discharging his duties. There should probably be some form of investigation into this incident. On the other hand, this is no reason for this forum to descend into its usual clamorous whining consisting of 'OMG Fk teh pigs we needz a revolution now'. In the end, mistakes are made, and whilst they are unfortunate, they are not an excuse to start lambasting the police as being entirely evil in every respect, or to incite violence against them (yeah, violence against heavily armed police always works).

This is spot on. Police are as dangerous as the people they protect us from and the police are not culpable in that being the case but that is the way it is. This is why I am against gun control. In many communities, the police's interests do not totally align with the interest of their charges and the charges should have the opportunity to protect themselves.

The kid reached for his BB-gun (which looks like a handgun... you never know what kind of gun it is in an inner city setting like Cleveland) when he was instructed to "put his hands up". Obviously the officer should be concerned when someone is reaching for a gun when they are instructed to put their hands up. Obviously it was a misunderstanding and a tragic accident, but the fact he reached for the gun should not be ignored. And taking a gun out of your wasteband is threatening when a police officer is telling you to put your hands up...

It is scary to see people in here call police officers "thugs" and how they are "enemies of the people". I hope you aren't put in a situation where a police officer is required to help you, I'm sure you'll be a singing a different tune, at least I'd hope so.

Sometimes good protocol followed by good police leads to tragedy. What I take from this and other situations like this is that we lose our freedom when we become totally dependent on the police for a community identity and narrative.

Cyber bullying a man in his 30s that broadcasts his entire life on the internet is worth far more righteous indignation than this.

I think we have to move on from this ridiculous idea that cops should never have their lives at risk. No one is forcing them to do this job; they chose to. Part of the job is putting your life on the line to protect others. They don't just get to shoot their way out of every single situation where they could possibly hypothetically be harmed. If the child is reaching for the toy gun on his waistband, get to cover or something; it's not a license to mow him down. Lethal force should be an absolute last resort, not something to be used whenever they feel the slightest bit threatened.

Also dead0man is a coward piece of shit, but we already all knew that.

Why would you give a cop any reason to interact with you?  They're not there to be your friend.

Horrific, I'm glad the police here don't carry guns. People shouldn't be afraid of the police and cases like this inspire division between law enforcement and the people.

So, in America aren't toy guns deliberately designed with fluorescent orange marker around the tip to show them as clearly fake? Are toys deliberately designed to resemble real guns? That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen...

Well, maybe the citizen-police relationship in the US has really come to a point where no interaction is the best policy, but I still find it absurd.

Citizens shouldn't be afraid to interact with the police in a democracy - saying that you should treat the police like a foreign occupation power (no eye contact, no talk etc.) is absurd. It can only increase the alienation between citizens and police if there is no normal human interaction between them.

Police officers are meant to service and help people, so they should be on friendly term with (law abiding) citizens.

If you pull out a gun in front of cops who are confronting you, what exactly do you expect?

Why do you give real guns to irresponsible people? Give them rubber bullets or Tasers. Real guns should only be allowed to the more qualified policemen.

Yeah, unlike the tragedy that just happened in New York - where a rookie policeman discharged his weapon into a darkened hallway after being startled, and killed an unarmed man - this sounds like a case where the officer genuinely believed his life was in danger based on what he saw. A horrible outcome, but likely a legitimate shoot.

And for God's sake, can we ban these realistic toy guns? There's no reason for them to exist besides getting kids killed by police.

No, no and no. That minding only exist in America and it's honestly very dangerous. People shouldn't fear policemen (unless they have some reason to). No wonder violence is so high compared to the Western World. People will solve their issues with their own guns between each other instead of calling police.

Police should protect. Right now, police is making people afraid.

This is a tragedy, but the cop wasn't in the wrong. That gun looked realistic, the kid reached for
it when he was told to put his hands up, the cop was a rookie, ect.

I hate American police with a passion, but this one doesn't muster up much outrage.
