I always find it kind of hilarious how we pretend to be progressives on this forum but still treat people like sh**t.

I wasn't friends with Dixie, but I'm not going to dance on his grave.

StatesRights got away with this for years, but at least we as a community aren't going to tolerate it in newbies.  That's something, I guess.

I think everyone here can genuinely like people with opposite views on most of the issues. (Cathcon has always been one of my best forum friends, for example.) But someone like dixie who said clearly hateful and disgusting things, shouldn't be guaranteed to have his views treated as valid points, nor should we have to be cordial with someone who has similar ideas to those who burn crosses.

There's nothing un-progressive about treating racists like sh[inks].

I can't believe the hatred all of these "tolerant" progressives are spewing here. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves for being such ing hypocrites.

Tolerance isn't a progressive ideal. Equality and social justice are progressive ideals.

Tolerance is a 1990s Clintonite/2010s Neocon moderate hero ideal of "on a personal level, I find fags and nigs to be vile and disgusting just as much as the next guy, but we shouldn't let that spill into business matters."

I guess the virtue I most associate with being progressive is "being a good person." My mistake. Won't happen again.

Your stance here is bizarre and disappointing, especially in light of your history of getting it when it comes to people closer to you than Dixie.

I really don't get it.

"Being a good person" doesn't entail "being polite to unapologetic racists".

I find as a gay that I empathize with homophobes, and by proxy, racists.  I dont like their views and will work to change them.  But I understand why they think the way they do... So I dont fault them personally.

I realize how patronizing that is... But the constant witch hunt doesnt do any good.

Choosing to distance myself from my racist aunt is not the same as guilting her out of the family and calling her a bitch to her face. That's not very classy.

And I guess I understand this point of view. Maybe it's simplistic and old-fashioned, but I know I'd feel really crappy if I announced my departure and then everyone cheered as I left. So if I wouldn't like it, why should I put someone else through that?
