I lived in the San Francisco Bay area for several years, and was there during the anti-war protests of fall 2002 and early 2003.  A few weekends I was in the city during some heavy protesting, but I wasn't there when it got ugly and small business were trashed. 

I never did figure out how breaking a Korean restaurant's windows and stealing the cash register might convince President Bush not to invade Iraq.  I also don't understand why people think that setting buses on fire and trashing the streets will convince cops not to shoot people.
