the American right satirizes itself, so it's a low-hanging fruit.  liberals are also more likely to understand and appreciate devices such as satire.  there's also an ideological function here that discourages left-of-Democratic action, but we don't need to get into that.

I wonder how many dumb conservatives haven't figured out that Colbert isn't one of them.
