This month marks the 150th anniversary of his "March to the Sea."

For me, he is a huge FF and a personal hero. One of the best Americans. If only the rest of the Union leadership during and after the war had been as brave and prescient as he had been, we could have snuffed out the cancer that was Southern culture once and for all.

Great man. It's a shame he's not with us to day to burn down Ferguson PD HQ.

FF, but let's not act like he's this anti-racist crusader.  I mean read his quote.

Also, post-Ferguson Atlas is becoming unbearably ... crusadish.

The Johnson administration rejected Sherman's peace terms for being too conciliatory.

So, apparently, a friend-of-a-friend from college was driving through Georgia once.  Pretty fast; faster than it was marked or was really safe.  Probably like 80-plus or something.  Enter sirens, state troopers, they get pulled over.

"Son, do you know how fast you were going there?"

"I bet William Sherman went through here pretty fast, too."

Needless to say the ticket was massive.

Sherman was if anything one of the more Southern-friendly Northern generals.  Keep in mind, Sherman was the first person in charge of what eventually became LSU.  However, he didn't let that get in the way of fighting war in what he felt was the most efficacious manner.

Seriously? This was a man who explicitly stated his belief that entire tribes should be massacred to ensure that railroad companies would have enough space to build their lines. Even if you approve of his actions in the South, it's clear that he was an unhinged man with an extreme disregard for human life.
