However, it's unfortunate that this is probably as good as we can do. From what I've read, the man is a pretty clear HP when it comes to regulatory violations and refusal to pay fines with regards to his coal mining operations.

It's the same with NC Republicans. You have to take what you can get. Wink

A sad, sad reality.

Billionaire owner of the Greenbrier Jim Justice might run for governor. Can't link now. On my phone.

Here.

Justice is the richest man in West Virginia, I believe.
What's he make, $10 an hour?

Good because he has $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and because he's stayed in West Virginia and tried to help the people there by saving resorts or building new ones, but bad because he also has a litany of safety violations and unpaid fines that could be easy fodder for attack ads. But none of that matters, because when the good people of West Virginia realize they could have a Governor Justice they'll vote for him in droves Tongue.

Good thing the DGA doesn't have to spend a dime here and can focus on MT, NC, MO this race would've been the first to be triaged had he not run.

Not sure how newsworthy this is to the WV experts, but Congressman Dave McKinley is out

He'll be a great governor.

Yes, this is the other story from today. I forgot about it once Cole announced.

I'd have to imagine that the only Repub who might lose this is John Raese, and even then that's iffy.

The WVGOP has been talking a lot about Jim Justice's mine safety violations, the millions of dollars in bills he refuses to pay back to West Virginia businesses, and the millions in tax payer subsidies he's been getting to do all of this damage. All of it, especially the mine safety stuff, has been pretty effective.

Organization is going well for the Cole campaign. The President raised over four hundred thousand dollars from one event in July. The campaign has had a ton of volunteer signups.

Out of curiosity, do West Virginia legislators have term limits, as in Louisiana?  Or can they serve as long as they are able?

Nope, no term limits in WV when it comes to the State Legislature.

The two Goodwins are cousins of Manchin, correct? If one of them runs for Governor now, the other could run when Manchin retires or, if they really want to, take down Capito and have the following be the case:

Senator I: Manchin
Senator II: Manchin's Cousin, Booth Goodwin
Governor: Manchin's Cousin, Booth's Brother Carte Goodwin

The Demographic collapse of WV is quickening:

http://www.wvgazettemail.com/article/20151121/GZ01/151129887/1419

Same pattern as with everything else.  Eastern panhandle and WVU county increasing, everything else collapsing.

What the hell. For what reasons could West Virginia have over twice the disability rate of the national average?

Well, the banking industry in WV is incredibly dangerous.  Except for the East Panhandle, and govt and university, there aren't white collar jobs in WV--you mine, you drill, you log, you make chemicals.  On top of that WV is old and has high rates of diabetes and smoking.  Bad things start happening to people as they cross 50, especially if they have poor health habits.

There may be some level of fraud too, but whether it's higher there than elsewhere I don't know, but given their public health levels, age, and occupations, it's not unreasonable to expect WV to have a substantially higher disability rate than the country as a whole.  WV used to turn out a crapton of kids to replace all the workers they burned through, but that's not the case anymore.  And nobody immigrates to WV, unless they had to for a federal job Sen Byrd dragged into the state, and he's dead.
