The 1824 election left many participants bitter. Particularly, Federalist heir apparent John Quincy Adams, who had felt that his qualifications had entitled him to the Presidency, sought a rematch against the candidate he perceived to have won due to a "Corrupt Bargain." Despite Jackson obtaining a decisive win in the popular vote, many of his critics asserted that his appointment of freshman Senator Martin Van Buren as Secretary of State had been a political maneuver to reward the Little Magician's crucial role in securing Jackson's victory. Adams's attacks largely fell on deaf ears, as Jackson was very successful at portraying himself as a man of the people, and given Rachel Jackson's health, Jackson was less prone to going completely insane and alienating his Cabinet members and Vice-President. Thus, Jackson obliged when newly-minted states' rights advocate Calhoun urged Jackson to veto the Tariff of 1824. Jackson also made it the mission of his Presidency to defund the Bank of the United States, even though the Bank's expiration date was not scheduled until 1833.
With Crawford suffering from a debilitating stroke, remnants of the now-defunct Republican Party largely rallied around President Jackson. A notable exception was Speaker Henry Clay, who organized the National Republican Party to provide an outlet for Republicans who disliked Jackson and supported the Federalist ticket.
Should the next President be the slut's husband, or the pimp? The decision is yours.
