I wonder if Assad ever feels he should have just gone the Mubarak route, he could have made a comeback or at least lived in peace without destroying his country.

Yeah, he'll be dead relatively soon.

This shouldn't surprise anyone, though. Under Morsi, he would have been convicted and sentenced to death, along with every single ally and opponent of Morsi they could brand as an ally. But Morsi overreached, and now Mubarak's former military loyalists are back in power. They were always going to make sure he was protected.

It would have been a kangaroo court no better than the ones that were held in Iraq post-2005. The guy is 86 years old and can't even stand up to testify in court. Let him die in peace.

Thankfully the sort of blood the Islamists clamor for will not be spilled in this case.

The huge difference is of course the sectarian divide in Syria, and the fact that Assad is part of a minority group.  Hard to see how Assad could have given way to his own equivalent of Sisi in that case.
