The Democrats nominate New York Governor William Averell Harriman for President and Tennessee Senator Albert Gore Sr for Vice President. Republican's renominate Eisenhower and Nixon for President and Vice President, discuss with maps.

Probably slightly better than Stevenson, maybe New York and Massachusetts flip this scenario.

But Eisenhower still crushes.

Harriman does better in the Northeast, but without winning any states there, as Ike is popular enough in NY to keep it from Harriman.  He has trouble with conservative Democrats, though Gore helps him a little on that front.  A relatively strong campaign from him might net something like this:

Eisenhower/Nixon  55%  449
Harriman/Gore       44%   82

I believe that Harriman was more pro-civil rights then Stevenson so you might get a scenario where the deep south goes for unpledged electors and the national Democrats are shut out of the electoral college, unless they pick up enough votes in New York to win there.
