Cuomo Selects Senator Joaquin Castro as VP

Today, Governor Andrew Cuomo, the Governor of New York and Democratic Nominee for President, announced Senator Joaquin Castro as his nominee for Vice President. Senator Castro has been in the Senate for 2 years, following 6 years in the House. His brother, Julian Castro, was President Obama's Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, after serving as the Mayor of San Antonio. Julian is currently running for Senate in Texas to replace the retiring John Cornyn. Castro gives Cuomo an in-road to the Hispanic community, as well as the progressive movement.

Scalise Defeated In Primary

Today, Speaker Steve Scalise of Louisiana was defeated in a primary election for his House seat, the first time that has ever happened. He lost to 75 year old moderate Elbert Guillory, a former Democrat who switched parties in 2013. Guillory is expected to easily win in November. Scalise has announced that he will step down as Speaker upon the election of a successor.

McMorris Rodgers Elected Speaker

Today, the House elected its' second female Speaker in Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a Republican from Washington. Rodgers, the former House Majority Whip, defeated House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy in a close fight in a closed Republican vote. Lynn Jenkins of Kansas will serve as Majority Whip.

Debates: 2-2 For Each

In the four debates, each party won an equal amount. In the first debate on domestic policy, President Kasich successfully defended his record against Governor Cuomo. In the Town Hall debate, Cuomo seemed more personable than Kasich. The VP Debate featured a bored Heller and unprepared Castro. Fortunately for Castro, it was much easier than he expected, making it an easy win. However, based off of the strikes against ISIL, President Kasich demolished Governor Cuomo in the Foreign Policy debate, leaving both parties gaining no main momentum from the debates.
