Halibut for me, followed closely by cod, salmon, and sardines.

Mahi Mahi is absolutely delicious

Cod, Catfish, Salmon, Tuna and Trout come close though.

So many great options.

My personal preference is salmon, with sardines as a close second (unfortunately everybody I know hates the smell that comes with tinned sardines)

No surprise that salmon is winning.

As a Minnesotan, if I said anything other than walleye, caught fresh, filleted, breaded in seasoned flour, eggs, and crushed up soda crackers and fried in fresh oil, Iwould be committing sacrilege.

Tuna is my second favorite.

By the way... The appropriate sides for the walleye is fresh fruit salad (pineapple, strawberries, grapes, melon), roasted mixed root veggies (must have rutabaga and parsnip) or potato salad, and buns to help if you get a bone in your throat.  Coffee and bars for dessert.

If youre Canadian, you do fried potatoes and baked beans with it.

While it's not the fish I think taste best, I think it's the fish I could eat everyday without becoming tired of it; herring, there's nothing better than a ripe herring served on a rye bread with pig fat and raw onion, served with a beer and a snaps. I get hungry just at the thought.

Do you mean pickled, ingemann?  Not ripe?

Ripe fruit is delicious.  Ripe cheese can be delicious.  Ripe meat or fish is never delicious, unless you're Gustaf and enjoy surströmming.

Probably malted herring based on his description.

Salmon, 'cause I'm a sheep.  But seriously salmon (especially in lox form) is just about the tastiest animal product out there.  If the only meats I could eat were salmon, pork, and duck, I'd be a happy man.

In general oily fish >>> white fish.  And as I've grown older I've gotten more of a taste for the pungent, salty cured stuff like herring and anchovies.

I agree with much of what you said, and I almost voted salmon (my taste buds are unusual for the Midwest).

Voted salmon, but will offer a write-in for roughy, which I really like with steamed veggies.

I've actually not had walleye, as it is uncommon around here, but I have heard how good it is. My uncle loves it. I'll have it one of these days.

Yes snowguy is correct walleye is best.

I grew up in MN, and indeed fresh walleye breaded in Shore Lunch and fried is impossible to beat. However, after spending eight years in MA I would put a fresh broiled scrod (from the sacred cod) near the top. As honorable mention I had a truly yummy sole meuniere prepared tableside at a small hotel near Lyon France.

Despite the unfortunate name, crappie.  If I were the type to take up fishing, they are what I'd fish for.

Crappies are tasty... But walleye is usually the better bet here.  Crappies are good for ice fishing.

Also... Its pronounced crah-pee

Catfish, even tastier after you catch them with your bare hands.

Surprised some seafood marketing people haven't seized on the more appealing names.

I mean there is a reason we don't use rapeseed oil.
